If you’re managing a nonprofit organization, chances are you eat, sleep, and breathe your mission. You’ve worked and worked, but now your organization has hit a plateau and you’re wondering how you’ll reach your goals. We’re glad you’re here. This article is for you.
Growth is within reach. Here’s how we know: because you have yet to optimize Google grants for nonprofits.
The Challenges of Growing Your Nonprofit
You’ve probably poured countless dollars and hours into every attempt to grow your cause and expand your reach. And we don’t blame you. Your mission is worth it! But we have to be honest—you might be going about it all wrong.
Here are some of the common problems we see in the world of nonprofit marketing:
Traditional marketing can be successful but is often too expensive for the average charity to maintain.
- Putting on events is fun, but time-consuming, and your reach is limited to the attendees.
- “Grassroots” or “word of mouth” marketing are more buzz words than they are actual strategies for growth.
So, where does this leave you?
A New Strategy: Let Google Do the Work
Oh..and pay the bill too!

When managed correctly, many charities using Google Grants report:
- Tens of thousands of new site visitors each year
- Measurable increase in web-generated donations

So, what are you waiting for? If you have any hold up at this point, it is more than likely one of two common problems we often hear from nonprofit managers:
I don’t know how to use and manage my Google Grant.
I don’t have time to effectively optimize my Google Grant.
Don’t Know How?
If you’re looking for some guidelines, we’ve included some of the most important elements below. Be warned, this is not for the faint of heart. Google can take away that grant as easily as they give it out.
Google Ad Grant Policy and Best Practices
- Eligibility
You must have and maintain your 501(c)3 status in order to continue using Google Ads for nonprofits.
- CTR
Failure to achieve a 5% click-through-rate (CTR) for two consecutive months can result in account deactivation.
- Relevance
Your ad copy must stay fresh and current and must relate directly to your website and your mission. Plan to update your ads at least every 90 days (we recommend much more frequently).
- Keywords
Use of single word keywords is prohibited and keywords with a quality score of one or two cannot be used.
- Structure
Your ad grants account must contain the required number of ads, ad groups, and ad extensions in your campaign.
- Analytics
Google requires you to measure your conversion rate and report a minimum of one conversion per month.
